A young girl was attacked by a lioness at a zoo in southern China in a shocking incident that has raised serious questions about safety measures and supervision at the park.
The child, believed to be around two years old, was visiting the animal feeding area at Shantou Zhongshan Park Zoo in Guangdong province when the frightening encounter occurred. According to zoo staff, the girl was holding a piece of meat when she approached the lion enclosure, prompting the animal to lunge toward her through the bars.
Witnesses described the moment the lioness suddenly reached through the cage and grabbed at the child, sending nearby visitors into panic. Adults rushed forward to pull the girl away as the animal swiped at her arm.
Zoo officials later said the child had entered an interactive feeding zone designed for visitors to feed animals, but admitted that she should not have been allowed into the area because of her age.
Staff claimed the lioness likely reacted to the meat the girl was holding, which may have triggered the animal’s natural hunting instincts when she came too close to the enclosure.
The girl was quickly taken to a nearby hospital where doctors treated her for minor injuries. Fortunately, authorities said she did not suffer life-threatening wounds.
The incident has sparked criticism online, with many questioning how a child so young was able to approach a lion enclosure in the first place. Others pointed to the design of the cage itself, noting that the lioness was able to reach through the bars to grab at the child.
Several social media users expressed disbelief that a large predator could physically reach visitors standing outside the enclosure, calling the setup “dangerous” and “unacceptable.”
Following the incident, the zoo reportedly closed the area temporarily while staff reviewed safety procedures.
It remains unclear whether the park will face penalties or make structural changes to the enclosure, but the alarming encounter has reignited debate over the safety of interactive animal attractions, particularly when young children are involved.
