Scenes of chaos unfolded in Washington, D.C.’s Navy Yard district after dozens, and eventually hundreds, of youths flooded the popular gathering spot, sparking fights, robberies, and at least one gunshot that sent crowds scattering.
Video captured from the scene shows large groups of teenagers, many dressed in black, clashing in the street as tensions escalated throughout the evening. Moments later, panic broke out as gunfire was reported, with crowds seen running in all directions while police rushed to respond.
Authorities say numerous law enforcement officers descended on the Navy Yard area as the situation spiraled.
According to the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD), officers first noticed a group of juveniles gathering around 6:30 p.m. in the park area between First Street and New Jersey Avenue SE near the entrance to the Navy Yard Metro station.
But what started as a small gathering quickly ballooned.
By approximately 8:30 p.m., police say the crowd had grown to roughly 200 people, turning the busy neighborhood into a chaotic scene that residents described as out of control.
Over the next several hours, multiple incidents were reported.
Around 9:15 p.m., investigators say a group of suspects assaulted another juvenile in the 1200 block of First Street SE before stealing the victim’s shoes and jacket and fleeing the scene. Authorities said the victim was not physically injured.
Roughly 30 minutes later, tensions escalated further when a suspect allegedly fired a gun into the air in the nearby park area.
Members of the National Guard who happened to be nearby witnessed the gunfire and quickly intervened, stopping the suspect before the situation could escalate further.
Officers recovered the firearm at the scene.
Police later confirmed that a 15-year-old boy from Southwest D.C. was arrested in connection with the shooting. He now faces charges including unlawful discharge of a firearm, endangerment with a firearm, and carrying a pistol without a license.
Despite the frightening moments captured on video, authorities say no injuries have been reported.
Witnesses described the evening as chaotic as law enforcement worked to disperse the crowd and restore order.
Video from the scene also showed officers chasing at least one teenager through a nearby alley as police attempted to break up the gathering and track down those involved in the disturbances.
The Navy Yard area, typically known as a lively waterfront district packed with restaurants, apartments, and nightlife, was left rattled by the unrest.
