There are humbling moments in life, and then there is whatever just happened to Laura Benanti at 30,000 feet.
A video making the rounds shows the Tony Award-winning Broadway star sitting on a plane, absolutely stunned, not shaken, not stirred, but stunned, that an entire group of theater kids onboard had no idea who she was. Not one. Zero. A complete goose egg.
And she is not taking it lightly.
Benanti jokes in the clip, “Not a single one of them recognized me and I could not tolerate that obviously,” which is the exact level of dramatic energy you would expect from someone who has spent a career commanding stages in front of thousands.
This is like LeBron James walking into a pickup game at LA Fitness and nobody picking him. It just should not happen.
Now, context matters. Benanti is a massive name in the Broadway world, Tony winner, decades of stage work, the whole deal. But if you live outside that bubble, she is not exactly plastered across blockbuster movie posters every summer. Her screen work has been more low key, including her recent role as Cindy Stephens in Mayor of Kingstown.
Still, theater kids not recognizing her? That is like a film bro not recognizing Scorsese.
