A chilling discovery involving circling vultures has led to the arrest of a Florida teenager now accused of carrying out a brutal killing that investigators say involved deliberate and calculated actions.
Authorities say 28 year old Colie Lee Daniel had been missing for about a week when the grim scene was uncovered, with vultures reportedly swarming around a suitcase containing human remains.
Police have since arrested 19 year old Lucas Jones, who is now charged with second degree murder in connection with Daniel’s death.
According to investigators, the case took a disturbing turn after Jones’s girlfriend came forward with claims that he confessed to the killing in shocking terms.
She told authorities that Jones admitted he “killed somebody and cut him up,” later stating he targeted Daniel “because he was a sex offender and he wanted to kill him.”
The girlfriend also revealed she had no knowledge of how the two men met, but claimed Jones had printed out a list of nearby registered sex offenders prior to the alleged crime.
Detectives say the evidence points to a calculated act, with one official stating that Jones “not only had the opportunity but made deliberate acts before, during, and after, which is indicative of his conscious decision to kill.”
The gruesome nature of the discovery has intensified scrutiny on the case, with legal experts suggesting the charges could escalate.
While Jones currently faces a second degree murder charge, authorities have indicated that more severe charges, potentially including capital murder, could be considered as the investigation develops.
“I wouldn’t be shocked, due to its heinous nature, if they have the plethora of evidence that they say that they do, that they don’t seek the death penalty just based on the actual heinous nature of it,” one observer noted.
The case has sent shockwaves through the local community, as investigators continue working to piece together the full sequence of events leading up to the killing and the disturbing disposal of the body.
