Heartbreaking footage has captured the final moments of three teenage girls who drowned after being swept away by powerful currents while posing for photos at a popular waterfall in southern India.
The tragedy unfolded around April 9–10, 2026, at the Mullungummi Waterfall in the Anantagiri Hills, located in Alluri Sitharama Raju district, near the coastal city of Visakhapatnam.
The victims, identified as Trisha, 17, Ratnakumari, 16, and Pavitra, 16, were among a group of five girls from Jambavalasa village who had visited the scenic spot during festival holidays, shortly after completing their intermediate exams.
What was meant to be a joyful outing quickly turned into a devastating accident.
According to police, the girls were laughing, embracing, and filming selfies in what appeared to be shallow water when three of them climbed onto a large rock in the middle of the stream. Within moments, the situation turned deadly.
The rock, made dangerously slippery by the rushing water, caused them to lose their footing. As they fell, they were pulled into strong undercurrents hidden beneath the surface.
None of the girls were able to swim.
Chilling video circulating online shows the group smiling and posing together just seconds before panic erupts, with the girls suddenly losing balance and being dragged away by the force of the water.
A fourth girl who entered the water was rescued by locals, while the fifth had remained on shore.
Despite efforts to save them, the three teenagers could not be recovered in time.
Authorities say the incident highlights the hidden dangers of seemingly calm natural water bodies, particularly during the monsoon season or in areas with uneven terrain and strong currents beneath the surface.
The deaths have sent shockwaves through the local community, with grieving families left struggling to come to terms with how a carefree day out turned into an unimaginable loss.
What began as laughter and celebration ended in tragedy, with the final moments of the girls’ lives now serving as a stark warning about the risks of taking photos in hazardous locations.
