A day of high-speed motorsport turned to tragedy after a rally car veered off course and slammed into a group of spectators, leaving one man dead and several others injured.
The devastating incident unfolded during the South American Rally in Mina Clavero, where large crowds had gathered along the route to watch the action.
The crash occurred on the Giulio Cesare section when a Volkswagen Polo driven by Paraguayan competitors Didier Arias and Héctor Núñez lost control on a high-speed bend.
The vehicle reportedly began to roll before careering off the track and into an area packed with onlookers, triggering scenes of chaos and panic.
Emergency services rushed to the scene, initially treating three injured spectators, two adults and a minor, who were transported to nearby medical facilities.
Hours later, authorities confirmed that one of the injured, a 25-year-old man from Córdoba, had died after being admitted in critical condition.
Among the other victims, a 40-year-old woman suffered a fractured ankle but is said to be out of danger, while her daughter sustained minor injuries. The drivers involved in the crash were not seriously hurt.
The section of the course, located on a downhill stretch near Mina Clavero known for attracting large crowds, was immediately shut down to allow emergency teams to respond.
In the wake of the incident, organisers made the decision to cancel the final day of the rally.
A crisis committee has since been formed to coordinate support for those affected and to investigate the cause of the crash, with officials examining whether mechanical failure, driver error, or external conditions may have played a role.
The tragedy has once again raised serious concerns about spectator safety at rally events, where fans often gather dangerously close to high-speed vehicles, particularly on corners and high-risk sections of the course.
As the investigation continues, the local community has been left in shock by the loss of life at an event that draws thousands of motorsport fans each year.
