You hear about “gaming the system” all the time, but this might be the most absurd, borderline cartoon-villain version of it yet.

Some trader allegedly rolled up to Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport with a hairdryer and decided, you know what, let’s just manually turn up the temperature.

Not metaphorically. Literally.

According to reports, this guy heated up a weather sensor at the airport on two separate days, April 6 and April 15, just enough to spike the recorded temperature. Why? Because he had money riding on prediction market bets that depended on how hot it got in Paris that day.

And somehow… it worked.

Those tiny temperature bumps were enough to tip the scales, and he walked away with around $34,000 in winnings. All thanks to what might be the most low-budget, high-IQ heist method of all time, a hairdryer and a dream.

The bets were placed on Polymarket, which uses real-world data, like official weather readings, to settle outcomes. So if the “official” temperature hits a certain number, you win.

Unless, of course, someone is out there blow-drying the thermometer like they’re getting it ready for a night out.

French weather agency Météo-France was not amused. They’ve filed a criminal complaint, and police are now investigating what is essentially the world’s most niche form of market manipulation.

And honestly, it raises a wild point, these prediction markets are only as solid as the data they rely on. If one guy with a hairdryer can mess with the outcome, that’s… not ideal.

To their credit, Polymarket reacted quickly and switched to a different temperature sensor for Paris. Which feels like the bare minimum after someone just proved you can hack the weather with something you bought at a pharmacy.

You’ve got to respect the creativity, even if it’s wildly illegal. Everyone else is out here analyzing charts, running models, checking forecasts. This guy said forget all that, I’m bringing heat directly to the source.

Somewhere, a meteorologist is shaking their head. Somewhere else, a gambler is wondering why they didn’t think of it first.

Either way, this might be the first time in history someone turned a hairdryer into a financial instrument.
