A 79-year-old man who once owned the iconic suburban Chicago home featured in the holiday film Home Alone has been found dead just days after being arrested on serious criminal charges.
John Abendshien was discovered on Wednesday in a nature preserve in Lake Forest after being reported missing earlier the same day.
Authorities confirmed that his body was located in Derwen Mawr Nature Preserve, where officials later ruled his death as asphyxia consistent with a self-inflicted act.
The development comes only days after Abendshien had been released from custody following his arrest on multiple felony charges related to child sexual abuse material.
Investigators say the case began with a cyber tip that linked an online account to explicit images involving children. That tip ultimately led authorities to Abendshien, who was charged with seven counts of possession of child sexual abuse material.
He had been released from jail pending trial at the time of his death.
The case has drawn widespread attention due to Abendshien’s past connection to the well-known residence in Winnetka, famously used as the family home in the 1990 film Home Alone.
Local law enforcement officials have stated that the incident appears to be isolated and have emphasized there is no ongoing threat to the public.
The sudden death, coming so soon after the charges were brought, has added a further layer of shock to a case that had already generated significant public interest.
Authorities have not released additional details as the investigation concludes, but the timeline of events has left many in the community grappling with the rapid and troubling sequence of developments.
