Two teenage boys have died after taking part in a dangerous “train surfing” stunt on a metro line in Vienna, in a tragedy linked to the growing trend of viral social media challenges.

The victims, aged 17 and 18 and reportedly from the Czech Republic, were among a group of four friends who climbed onto the roof of a moving U4 metro train in an attempt to film the reckless stunt.

Disturbing footage circulating online shows the teens sitting and lying across the top of the speeding train with their arms outstretched as it travels through the city.

Moments later, the ride turned catastrophic.

Authorities say the group collided with a pedestrian bridge while atop the train, suffering devastating head injuries in the impact.

Emergency responders rushed the teenagers to hospital, where the two older boys later died, one several days after the incident and the other roughly a week later.

The two surviving youths, aged 13 and 16, were also reportedly injured.

Officials say the incident occurred while the group was attempting the increasingly notorious practice known as “train surfing,” in which individuals ride on the exterior of moving trains for thrills and social media content.

The stunt has repeatedly drawn warnings from transport authorities around the world due to the extreme risk posed by overhead structures, electrical systems, and high speeds.

Video of the incident has spread widely online, reigniting concerns over how viral challenges on platforms such as TikTok can encourage dangerous imitation among teenagers seeking attention or online notoriety.

Transport officials and safety experts have long warned that even a slight miscalculation while riding atop trains can prove fatal within seconds.

The tragedy has shocked both Austrian and Czech communities, particularly given the young ages of those involved.
