Two people were injured in a terrifying stabbing attack in north London on Wednesday after a suspect allegedly targeted Jewish residents in a neighborhood with one of the UK’s largest Jewish populations.
The violence unfolded in Golders Green, a heavily Jewish suburb in northwest London, where authorities rushed to reports of a man attempting to stab members of the public.
Shomrim, the Jewish neighborhood patrol group that operates in the area, said its volunteers helped apprehend the suspect after he was allegedly “attempting to stab Jewish members of the public.”
The group said two victims suffered injuries during the attack and were treated at the scene by Hatzolah, the Jewish volunteer emergency medical service.
Dramatic video circulating online appeared to show the chaotic aftermath as emergency responders and police descended on the scene while bystanders watched in shock.
According to Shomrim, officers deployed a taser during the confrontation before finally taking the suspect into custody.
Police have not yet released the suspect’s identity or disclosed a possible motive, but an investigation into the incident remains ongoing.
The attack immediately sparked alarm given Golders Green’s large Jewish population and growing concerns over antisemitic violence across Britain.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer addressed the incident during Parliament, calling the stabbing “deeply concerning.”
He said authorities were working to establish the full circumstances surrounding the attack and stressed the need to be “absolutely clear in our determination to deal with any of these offences, the likes of which we’ve seen too much recently.”
Golders Green is home to roughly 15,000 residents, with approximately half identifying as Jewish, according to 2021 census figures.
The neighborhood contains numerous synagogues, Jewish schools, kosher restaurants, and community organizations, making it one of the most prominent Jewish communities in the United Kingdom.
The stabbing comes amid mounting fears over a recent wave of antisemitic incidents across Britain.
Just weeks earlier, several Hatzolah emergency vehicles were damaged in an arson attack, while multiple synagogues have also reportedly been targeted in recent months.
An attempted arson incident was additionally reported in the Golders Green area earlier this week.
The latest violence has intensified concerns among Jewish residents already on edge over rising hostility and repeated attacks targeting their communities.
