A bizarre attempted armed robbery at a West Virginia gas station is going viral after surveillance footage showed a store clerk calmly confronting the suspect and apparently talking her out of the crime in real time.

The incident occurred around 4 a.m. on May 1 at a Shell gas station on Little Coal River Road in Alum Creek, according to West Virginia State Police.

Authorities identified the suspect as 42-year-old Rebecca Peterson of Oceana in Wyoming County.

Surveillance footage from inside the store shows Peterson entering the business wearing a hoodie and carrying a handgun before approaching the counter and announcing a robbery.

According to police reports, Peterson even identified herself by name during the encounter.

But instead of panicking, the clerk behind the counter remained remarkably calm throughout the confrontation.

In the now-viral video, the employee can repeatedly be heard telling Peterson to “put it down” while questioning what she was doing. The interaction quickly takes on an almost surreal tone as the clerk appears more focused on de-escalating the situation than reacting with fear.

Authorities say Peterson fired multiple rounds from the handgun during the incident, with at least one bullet striking a wall inside the store. No injuries were reported.

Despite the gunfire, the clerk continued speaking calmly to Peterson until she eventually lowered the weapon and left the store without taking any money.

Police said Peterson fled the scene in a black SUV traveling north on U.S. 119.

Troopers later located and stopped the vehicle in Kanawha County, where authorities recovered a firearm believed to have been used during the attempted robbery.

Peterson was subsequently arrested and charged with:

attempted armed robbery
wanton endangerment
brandishing
assault
destruction of property

As the footage spread online, many viewers expressed disbelief at how unusual the interaction appeared.

Commenters repeatedly praised the clerk for remaining composed despite the obvious danger of the situation, particularly after shots were fired inside the store.

Others noted the strange contrast between the seriousness of an armed robbery and the oddly hesitant, awkward nature of the confrontation captured on camera.

While many online users joked about the surreal exchange, others pointed out how quickly the incident could have turned deadly once a firearm was involved.

Authorities have not released additional details regarding Peterson’s motive.

The incident remains under investigation.
