In a horrifying incident that has sent shockwaves across Spain and reignited fierce debate over the country's immigration policies, a man described as being of Maghrebi appearance allegedly stabbed a teenage girl to death in a busy street in Esplugues de Llobregat, on the outskirts of Barcelona.
The brutal attack unfolded in broad daylight yesterday morning, around 11 am on Joan Miró street, a residential area close to the Sant Joan de Déu hospital, as terrified passers-by looked on. Witnesses reported the attacker shouting 'Alá' or phrases in Arabic during the frenzied assault, in which the victim suffered multiple stab wounds to her neck, chest, and abdomen.
Emergency services rushed to the scene but were unable to save the young woman, believed to be in her mid-teens. A 58-year-old man who bravely tried to intervene was also injured, though his wounds were not life-threatening.
Dramatic footage circulating on social media shows the moment police detained the suspect a short time later in Barcelona's Les Corts neighbourhood. The man, still reportedly armed with a large knife, was seen acting erratically as officers moved in. He had fled the original crime scene before being tracked down.
Catalan police, the Mossos d'Esquadra, have confirmed the arrest and said the investigation is under judicial secrecy. Crucially, a spokesperson has ruled out the possibility of it being a domestic or 'gender violence' case, as there was no known relationship between the attacker and his victim.
The killing has triggered an outpouring of anger online, with one widely shared post declaring: 'A terrorist of Maghrebi appearance has beheaded a girl in Barcelona shouting "Allah". What used to be called Islamic terrorism is now always mental health crimes.
Many Spaniards are demanding answers from Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez's government, accusing it of failing to control borders and integrate newcomers amid record migration from North Africa and beyond. Critics point to a pattern of similar violent incidents in European cities and question whether 'multiculturalism' is working.
Neighbors described the area as normally peaceful, making the daylight savagery all the more shocking. One local told reporters the suspect had been seen earlier behaving nervously and even brandishing a large blade. As Spain grapples with the aftermath, politicians from across the spectrum have condemned the killing. The local council in Esplugues expressed its 'deep regret' and offered full cooperation with the investigation.
