Terrifying Ring camera footage out of Sacramento is fueling outrage after a knife-wielding man on felony probation allegedly tried to force his way into a family home, only to be released back onto the streets less than two hours after his arrest.
The disturbing incident unfolded on April 30 in Sacramento’s Arden-Arcade area, where homeowner security footage captured 56-year-old Brian Mattson approaching a residence late at night while brandishing a knife and making stabbing motions toward the front door.
The resident, watching through the Ring camera system, reportedly listened in horror as the man yelled outside the home while attempting to gain entry.
Video from the scene shows Mattson pacing near the doorway holding the blade as he behaves erratically in the darkness.
According to authorities, Mattson was already on felony probation at the time of the incident.
Yet despite the alarming footage and the suspect’s criminal status, he was reportedly arrested only for misdemeanor criminal trespassing.
Then came the part leaving residents furious.
Mattson was released less than two hours later after Sacramento County Probation allegedly declined to place a hold on him.
So a man on felony probation can allegedly walk up to random homes waving a knife in the middle of the night, terrorize residents on camera, get arrested and still be back out before most people finish watching a movie.
The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office later described the suspect’s behavior as “bizarre” and publicly asked additional possible victims to come forward because the limited initial charge prevented stronger immediate action.
Critics online blasted the situation as another example of a justice system that appears more interested in processing offenders quickly than protecting the public.
Social media users reacted with disbelief after learning the suspect was allegedly released almost immediately despite the frightening nature of the encounter.
One commenter wrote, “So homeowners are supposed to just wait until someone actually gets stabbed before the system takes action?”
Another added, “This guy was literally acting out a horror movie scene, and they let him right back out.”
The footage has reignited debate surrounding probation enforcement, repeat offenders, and public safety policies in major California cities.
Authorities have not said whether additional charges may be filed if more victims or incidents connected to Mattson are identified.
