Shocking security footage captured the terrifying moment a powerful whirlwind tore through a primary school courtyard in Vietnam, sending tables, chairs, and debris flying as panicked children scrambled to escape.
The dramatic incident unfolded on May 7 at Nam Chay Ethnic Boarding Primary School in the Van Ban district of Lao Cai province during what appeared to be a sudden and violent burst of extreme weather.
Video from the school shows the courtyard initially calm before a fast-moving whirlwind suddenly forms and barrels through the area within seconds.
Children and staff can be seen sprinting for cover as powerful winds lift furniture and loose debris into the air. Several students and adults were reportedly knocked to the ground during the chaos as the storm ripped across the campus.
Witnesses described scenes of panic as the unexpected vortex tore through the school grounds.
Despite the frightening footage, local authorities later confirmed that no fatalities or serious injuries were reported.
Officials said the whirlwind only lasted briefly but was strong enough to cause significant disruption and scatter objects across the courtyard.
The incident comes amid a stretch of volatile weather across northern Vietnam, where meteorologists say clashes between hot and cold air masses have triggered damaging winds, hailstorms, and even rare tornado-like formations in recent weeks.
Weather experts have warned that such sudden atmospheric instability can create dangerous localized wind events with little warning, particularly during seasonal transitions in early May.
