Hundreds Attend Funeral Of WWII Veteran With No Family After Community Refuses To Let Him Be Buried Alone
21 days ago
Sometimes the internet actually gets it right.
In a time where most viral stories are built around outrage, scams, or people screaming at each other in parking lots, the story of World War II veteran John Bernard Arnold III reminds you that there are still decent people out there willing to show up for someone they never even knew.
Arnold, a 98 year old veteran living in East Bridgewater, passed away with no remaining blood relatives. His mother died when he was just six years old, and his father passed away when Arnold was in his twenties. He never married, never had children, and by the end of his life, there was technically no immediate family left to stand beside him.
But as it turned out, he wasn’t alone at all.
About a decade ago, Arnold planned his own funeral. According to those who knew him, he wanted people to remember two things above everything else, his deep faith and his love for the United States.
And when word spread online that this elderly WWII veteran had no family to attend his funeral, the community responded in a massive way.
Hundreds of people showed up.
Not because they were related to him. Not because they had something to gain. They came because they believed a man who served his country deserved to be honored and remembered properly.
That image alone hits hard. Rows of strangers gathered together to make sure a veteran didn’t leave this world in silence.
Arnold had spent his later years at the Garrison Veterans Home, where staff and fellow residents became what many described as his “new family.” Caretaker Hailey Munroe remembered him as the type of person who could completely change the mood of a room the second he walked in.
“He walked into the room and he lit up the room,” she said. “No matter what you are going through, he always knew how to bring a smile, make you laugh.”
And judging by the turnout at his funeral, that kindness clearly left a mark on people.
One attendee summed it up perfectly with a statement that’s now spreading all over social media:
“Nobody should have to go alone, I don’t care who you are.”
That line right there is the entire story.
In an era where people barely know their neighbors anymore, hundreds of strangers took time out of their day to stand beside a man who had no family left, simply because they believed it was the right thing to do.
