Chaos erupted in Lower Manhattan Tuesday evening after a vehicle suddenly burst into flames and exploded near the iconic Charging Bull statue, sending massive plumes of thick black smoke pouring into the sky in one of the busiest areas of New York City.
According to the FDNY, emergency crews responded to reports of a car fire near Broadway and Stone Street around 5:42 p.m.
Disturbing video from the scene shows the vehicle, which appeared to be affiliated with the MTA, sitting on the side of the road as smoke rapidly intensified before the entire car became engulfed in flames.
Within moments, the vehicle erupted into what witnesses described as a terrifying inferno.
Onlookers can be seen backing away as thick smoke billowed through the financial district while flames consumed the vehicle in broad daylight just blocks away from crowds of tourists and office workers.
The footage spreading online has fueled renewed concerns about public safety in major American cities, particularly as videos of fires, explosions, infrastructure failures, and emergency incidents increasingly dominate social media feeds.
For several minutes, stunned bystanders reportedly watched helplessly as the blaze intensified while awaiting the arrival of firefighters.
Emergency crews eventually extinguished the fire shortly before 7 p.m.
Miraculously, no injuries were reported.
Authorities have not yet released an official cause for the explosion, and the incident remains under investigation.
