WASHINGTON – In yet another shocking act of violence targeting the nation’s capital, a gunman opened fire on Secret Service officers at a White House security checkpoint Saturday evening, prompting a swift and decisive response from law enforcement that left the suspect dead and a bystander wounded.
According to the U.S. Secret Service, the incident unfolded shortly after 6 p.m. ET near the checkpoint at 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW, just outside the White House complex. The unidentified male suspect approached the post, removed a weapon from a bag, and began firing at officers on duty.
Secret Service personnel immediately returned fire, striking the suspect. He was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. No Secret Service officers were injured in the exchange. A bystander was also hit by gunfire and hospitalized, with officials describing the individual’s condition as serious.
President Donald Trump was inside the White House at the time and was not impacted by the incident, officials confirmed. The White House was placed under a brief lockdown as agents secured the perimeter, with reports of dozens of shots echoing across the grounds. Journalists on the North Lawn described chaotic scenes, including rushed shelter-in-place orders.
The FBI is assisting in the investigation, which officials are treating as an isolated incident for now. One report identified the suspect as 21-year-old Nasire Best of Maryland, who had prior documented encounters with the Secret Service, including threats and attempts to breach White House grounds last summer.
This latest attack comes amid a disturbing pattern of threats and assassination attempts against President Trump and his administration. Just last month, an armed individual charged a security checkpoint at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, where Trump and top officials were present, heightening concerns over political violence and the security challenges facing the nation’s leadership.
