HONOLULU – A peaceful family outing at a popular Oahu beach turned into a nightmare over the weekend when a 6-year-old girl was viciously attacked by an unleashed Rottweiler, leaving her with deep puncture wounds and unable to walk.
The incident occurred at Off the Wall Beach on Oahu’s North Shore, a spot known for its surf and laid-back vibe that has reportedly seen repeated problems with off-leash dogs. Video circulating on social media shows two large Rottweilers running freely among beachgoers moments before the attack.
According to eyewitness accounts and reports from local station KHON2, the girl, identified as Eleanor, was playing with her father when one of the dogs charged and mauled her. She suffered at least 10 deep puncture wounds to her shoulder, back, armpit, thigh, and behind her knee, along with severe bruising.
Her mother later described the horror in comments shared widely online: “We took our daughter to the ER, she has substantial injuries. 10 deep punctures. I’m working with the police. The dog needs to be put down, and the owner needs to be brought to justice.
Eleanor remains in recovery and has to be carried because the bruising is so severe that she cannot walk on her own. In an interview with KHON2, the articulate young girl recounted the sudden terror: “I was really scared when that all happened... I was like, what’s going on? I’m so freaked out.”
Community outrage has boiled over, with multiple reports surfacing that the same dogs allegedly brought to the beach off-leash regularly may have been involved in prior incidents, including another alleged attack on a girl the night before. Locals have complained for years about irresponsible dog owners ignoring leash laws and basic safety at the scenic North Shore location.
The dog responsible is set to be euthanized, according to reports, as authorities investigate. The girl’s family is cooperating with police to hold the owner fully accountable.
This latest attack has reignited calls for stricter enforcement of leash laws and penalties for negligent pet owners in Hawaii, where families expect public beaches to be safe for children, not battlegrounds for uncontrolled animals. Many are asking why it took a brutal mauling of a little girl for action to be taken.
