DURHAM, N.C. — A middle-aged man became an instant hero on social media after he stepped in to stop a masked individual from setting an American flag on fire during Independence Day celebrations in downtown Durham.
The incident, captured on video and now circulating widely, unfolded on the evening of July 4, 2026. Footage shows a person wearing a black outfit and a white balaclava holding an American flag and attempting to light it with a lighter in a public area.
A fit, middle-aged man in a blue shirt and khakis quickly intervened, moving in to stop the burning by trying to take the flag away from the individual.
Several other masked people then confronted and attacked the man in response. In the scuffle that followed, the man overpowered his assailants, throwing at least two of them to the ground. He then walked away from the scene unharmed.
The protesters, now on the pavement, were heard calling for someone to dial 911 and requesting an ambulance.
