Tampa, Fla. — If you’ve ever woken up sore as hell after smashing legs at the gym and thought “damn, these thighs are cooked,” imagine trying to use that as your defense during a DUI stop. That’s exactly what 38-year-old Carlos Gonzalez attempted early Sunday morning in Hillsborough County, and it went about as well as you’d expect.
Deputies pulled Gonzalez over after clocking him at more than 65 mph in a 45-mph zone. They quickly determined he was impaired and put him through the standard field sobriety tests. That’s when the comedy gold started rolling.
According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office bodycam footage released as part of their July 4th holiday enforcement push (they made 19 DUI arrests that night alone), Gonzalez struggled to keep his balance during the walk-and-turn test. When the deputy asked what was going on, Gonzalez hit them with the ultimate gym bro excuse:
“I worked leg day yesterday… my thighs are not that strong.”The deputy, stone-faced and clearly over it, delivered the perfect deadpan reply:
“That’s okay. So did I.”

The footage, captured at a gas station under bright lights, shows Gonzalez in a gray button-up shirt and shorts, barefoot at points, wobbling along a red line painted on the concrete. He’s smiling and laughing like this is all some big misunderstanding, arms out for balance, occasionally glancing at his feet as instructed. The deputy stands there with arms crossed, calm as can be, while Gonzalez keeps trying to explain away his inability to walk a straight line.
It didn’t work.
Gonzalez was arrested and charged with Driving Under the Influence. No official blood alcohol level has been released yet, but the bodycam tells the story loud and clear. Leg day soreness might explain why your quads hate you the next morning, it does not explain why you’re swerving down the road or failing basic coordination tests in front of a cop.
