SANTA CRUZ, Calif. – In a heart-pounding display of courage that has gripped viewers nationwide, a lifeguard at Seabright State Beach charged into towering surf Saturday afternoon to rescue a young boy who had been overpowered by sudden, powerful waves.
The dramatic scene, captured on video by local resident and photographer Scott Vander Dussen around 3:45 p.m. on July 25, shows the lifeguard fighting through crushing 10-foot waves to reach the boy and haul him to safety after a harrowing struggle lasting several minutes.
Vander Dussen, who lives near the beach, described how conditions had been relatively calm before the ocean transformed in an instant. “Out of nowhere, the waves swelled three times the size… then crashed down,” he said. He spotted the boy’s head bobbing in the whitewater and raced to alert lifeguards.
What followed was pure heroism. The lifeguard dove into the chaos without hesitation. As massive swells repeatedly slammed into them, good Samaritans on the shore formed a human chain and attempted to assist—but the ferocious surf knocked several of them down, forcing them to retreat for their own safety.
“You know there were probably a dozen people that helped… and they formed like a human chain because at first you see a couple of people run out, and then they felt the intensity of the waves,” Vander Dussen recounted. “We didn’t want to have to see more people have to be rescued.”Undeterred, the lifeguard pressed on. A second guard joined the effort, and together they finally brought the boy safely to shore. Officials later confirmed the child was okay.
Bryan Kine, a lifeguard supervisor with Santa Cruz State Parks, praised the professionalism while cautioning would-be helpers: “Those bystanders, we appreciate their eagerness to help. But often we find that leads to more problems because they get swept off their feet… We’re really thankful that nobody else was injured or pulled out.”
The rescue was one of at least 25 ocean saves performed by lifeguards across Santa Cruz County that same day as a powerful long-period swell generated by distant storms battered the California coast with breaking waves up to 10 feet high. Authorities warn the elevated surf and sneaker-wave risk are expected to continue through the week.
Vander Dussen called it the most intense rescue he has ever witnessed and hopes the footage serves as a stark reminder of the ocean’s power. “It all really happened very, very quickly and took everyone by surprise,” he said.
In an era when real-life heroes can sometimes feel scarce, this California lifeguard’s split-second bravery and refusal to quit under life-threatening conditions stand as a powerful example of the courage that still defines so many first responders. The young boy is safe today because one man refused to let the Pacific win.
