CHICAGO – Graphic surveillance video released Thursday captures the moment four masked gunmen stormed a South Side gas station and opened fire on victims standing outside, killing two people and critically wounding two others, all while a Chicago police paddy wagon drove past the scene.
The attack unfolded around 12:23 a.m. on July 2 at a BP station in the 7600 block of South Halsted Street in the Auburn Gresham neighborhood. Security camera footage obtained and shared by the public safety site CWBChicago shows the four suspects, dressed in dark clothing and masks, approaching the victims before unleashing a barrage of gunfire.
In the video, the gunmen can be seen firing into the gas station lot. Roughly 30 seconds into the footage, a CPD paddy wagon passes at the top of the screen. Those officers radioed “shots fired,” with the sound of gunfire clearly audible in the background of the transmission.
Carlos A. Jones, 46, and Surbezz Clark, 53, were pronounced dead at the University of Chicago Medical Center. A 35-year-old woman and a 33-year-old man were also struck and remained in critical condition. The four attackers fled south on foot through a nearby alley and remain at large.
Chicago police later released still images of the suspects and are asking the public for help identifying them. Detectives have urged anyone with information to contact Area 2 Homicide or submit an anonymous tip.
The video has drawn sharp attention online for showing a marked police vehicle in the immediate vicinity during the shooting. Critics of the city’s public safety policies pointed to the incident as another example of the challenges facing officers in high-crime neighborhoods on Chicago’s South Side.
The shooting is one of many violent incidents that have continued to plague parts of the city this year. Authorities have not publicly detailed a motive, and the investigation remains active.
