A Ukrainian drone slammed into a packed tourist beach in southern Russia on Monday, killing at least four people — including a child — and injuring around 10 others in a shocking scene captured on video and circulating widely online.
The attack struck the popular Black Sea resort area of Arkhipo-Osipovka near Gelendzhik in Krasnodar Krai. Video footage shows beachgoers swimming and relaxing in the water under clear skies when a sudden explosion erupts on the shore, sending a plume of smoke rising as people nearby scramble.
Russian officials confirmed the deadly incident. Krasnodar Governor Veniamin Kondratyev reported that debris from the downed drone caused the casualties. “In the village of Arkhipo-Osipovka, due to the fall of UAV fragments, according to preliminary information, three people died. Another 13 people were injured, including children,” Kondratyev said earlier in the day. Updated figures later put the death toll at four, with one child among the dead, and roughly 10 wounded, some of them minors.
Emergency crews, including multiple ambulance teams, rushed to the scene. Local authorities ordered support for the victims and their families. The governor expressed “sincere condolences” to the relatives of those killed.
Ukrainian monitoring channels, including Supernova+, circulated the video and claimed the drone had been aimed at a nearby recreation facility called “Rassvet,” which they said houses missile designers. According to those reports, Russian air defenses shot the drone down about 300 meters short of its intended target, causing it to crash onto the beach instead.
The incident comes amid Ukraine’s ongoing campaign of long-range drone strikes deep into Russian territory as the war grinds on. Gelendzhik and nearby Black Sea coastal areas have faced repeated UAV threats, with Russian air defenses frequently engaging incoming drones over the region.
Eyewitnesses described the chaos as tourists and locals fled the beach. Some reported little or no warning sirens in the moments before the impact. Russian prosecutors said they were monitoring the response and assistance to victims.
The graphic video of the explosion amid vacationers has sparked strong reactions, highlighting the human cost as the conflict continues to reach civilian areas far from the front lines.
