Distracted Driver Nearly Mows Down Cop, Then Smashes Into Pulled-Over Car On Texas Highway

An El Paso police officer came inches from becoming roadkill when a distracted driver barreled straight at him during a routine traffic stop, only to slam into the stopped car and send it flying 500 feet down the shoulder.

Bodycam and dashcam video released by the El Paso Police Department captures the heart-stopping moment on Interstate 10 near mile marker 34 on July 25.

The motorcycle officer had lights flashing and was standing beside a blue vehicle he’d just pulled over, typing on a handheld device, when the out-of-control car came flying up from behind.

The driver somehow swerved at the last second, barely missing the cop, then plowed into the rear of the stopped car with enough force to shove it roughly the length of a football field and a half down the roadside.

Debris flew. The impact looked brutal.

Both the officer and the driver of the stopped vehicle suffered injuries. Authorities said neither was life-threatening, and both were expected to recover.

The at-fault driver walked away with only a citation for failing to control their speed and causing a collision.“This incident is a stark reminder that traffic stops are among the most dangerous parts of an officer’s job,” the department said in a statement. “In a matter of seconds, a routine stop nearly turned tragic.”

Cops are begging drivers to put the phone down, stay alert, and actually obey Texas’ move-over law when they see emergency lights on the shoulder.

One moment of distraction on the interstate almost turned a simple ticket stop into a potential tragedy. The video is a gut punch, and a warning no one should ignore.
