A 5-year-old boy is in critical but stable condition after plunging from a fourth-floor window of a Bronx apartment building onto the sidewalk below, according to police.
The incident occurred around 5:30 p.m. Sunday near Buchanan Place and Davidson Avenue in the University Heights section of the Bronx. The child, who was wearing only a diaper, landed hard on the concrete in front of horrified pedestrians.
Dramatic video from the scene shows the young boy lying motionless on the sidewalk near trash bags as bystanders gather. Two NYPD officers can be seen kneeling beside him, carefully turning the child onto his side while assessing his injuries.
In the footage, one onlooker can be heard exclaiming in shock, “Wow, a boy just fell out the window!” Another man shouts, “Where is the f–king parents, man?”Witnesses said they heard a loud impact before realizing a child had fallen from the building. One resident flagged down a passing police vehicle to get help to the scene quickly.
The boy was rushed to NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, where officials described his condition as critical but stable. Police said the injuries were consistent with a fall from an elevated position.
Building officials confirmed the window was equipped with safety guards intended to prevent children from falling. Investigators believe the boy somehow climbed over or squeezed through the guards. No arrests have been made, and police said there is no immediate indication of criminal activity. An investigation is ongoing to determine the exact circumstances of the fall and the level of adult supervision at the time.
This is the latest in a series of similar incidents involving young children falling from windows in the Bronx this year, raising renewed questions about apartment safety measures and parental oversight in multi-story buildings.
