Heartstopping Horror As Young Cyclist Is Sucked Under Flooded Arizona Bridge And Held Underwater For Several Minutes

A 20-year-old woman was dragged beneath a raging torrent and trapped underwater for several terrifying minutes after she was knocked from her bicycle while trying to cross a flooded bridge in Sabino Canyon, Tucson.

The dramatic scenes, captured on video, show the young rider vanishing into the churning brown water as family members and frantic bystanders scream and scramble to pull her free.

Just before 8 am on 13 August, a family of three decided to ride their bikes across Bridge Number One in the popular recreation area after overnight monsoon rains on Mount Lemmon had turned the usually manageable Sabino Creek into a powerful, fast-moving torrent. The 20-year-old woman lost her footing on the submerged bridge, was swept under the structure, and remained trapped as the current forced her through a drainage tunnel before ejecting her roughly 100 feet downstream.

Witnesses can be heard yelling in panic as rescuers plunge into the water. One bystander is seen desperately reaching for the submerged rider while others haul at arms and clothing. After several agonising minutes, she was finally dragged clear. CPR was started immediately on the muddy bank. She regained consciousness.

Two people, including the young woman, were taken to hospital and are reported to be in stable condition.

Pima County Sheriff’s deputies arrived shortly after the rescue and helped extract the group from the drainage area. Officials have used the incident to issue a blunt warning: never attempt to cross flooded washes or bridges, no matter how shallow the water may look. Monsoon runoff can create currents strong enough to knock grown adults off their feet and hold them under.

One local observer summed up the mood: the people who jumped in were heroes, the decision to ride across was reckless, and the whole episode was a stark reminder of how quickly Arizona’s desert washes can turn deadly.
