Police dramatically rescued a young woman after she was held captive for five days, bound hand and foot with ropes, handcuffs, and an iron chain, while a mask was forced over her face to stop her screams.
Emiliane Tamara Nunes Carvalho, 24, was discovered in a darkened bedroom in Águas Lindas de Goiás, near the Brazilian capital, on Friday after vanishing following a routine medical appointment.
Shocking bodycam-style footage circulating online shows officers bursting into the room and finding the terrified victim lying on a purple sheet, her arms, legs and neck secured with a web of restraints. She was struggling to breathe beneath the mask as officers worked frantically to free her.
The suspected perpetrator is her ex-partner, Ailton Rodrigues de Souza, who has been arrested. Police say he is accused of kidnapping, false imprisonment and repeated sexual assaults during her ordeal.
Emiliane had been reported missing since Monday 17 August after leaving home for a clinic appointment. Security cameras captured her leaving the medical centre, but she never returned. Her family raised the alarm, and officers began investigating possible links to her former partner.
On Friday, specialist police units tracked Rodrigues de Souza as he drove through the city. He allegedly tried to flee at high speed and resisted arrest before being detained. Officers then checked addresses linked to him and zeroed in on a recently rented house in the Jardim América III neighbourhood.
Inside one of the rooms they found Emiliane in a harrowing state. Police said she was secured with handcuffs, ropes and a heavy chain, with a mask covering her face to muffle any cries for help. Firefighters were called to cut away the restraints. She was taken to a local hospital, where her condition was described as stable.
Officers seized a 9mm pistol, sedatives, more restraints and a vehicle from the property. According to police statements, the victim later told investigators she had been drugged and subjected to repeated sexual violence throughout the five days she was held.
The case has sparked widespread outrage across Brazil, with the rescue video shared thousands of times and drawing strong public reaction. Police continue to investigate the full circumstances of the abduction and captivity.
Rodrigues de Souza remains in custody facing multiple serious charges.
