LEE'S SUMMIT, Mo. — A brazen daylight shooting at a busy suburban intersection left two people injured Wednesday after a group of suspects leapt from a pickup truck and unleashed gunfire on a vehicle stopped at a red light, police said.
Dashcam video from a nearby transport van captured the attack around 10:50 a.m. on southbound Missouri Highway 291 at Chipman Road. A maroon car waited at the light when a dark gray Ford F-150 pulled up. Multiple suspects in dark clothing got out, opened fire, then piled back into the truck and fled. The entire sequence lasted about eight seconds.
Lee’s Summit Police Department spokesperson Kelly Johnson said the driver of the targeted vehicle was shot four times and taken to a hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. A second person was treated for injuries from shattered glass. Three other nearby vehicles were also struck by gunfire, though no one else was shot.
Police later said their investigation indicated four suspects were involved. Using witness accounts and Flock camera footage, officers identified the getaway vehicle as a dark gray Ford F-150 with a California vanity plate. The truck was last seen making a U-turn onto northbound Highway 291. No arrests had been announced as of early Thursday.
Johnson said investigators do not believe the shooting was a random attack on strangers.“We believe it’s an isolated event between two people who have knowledge of one another, that they’re not just out targeting victims who have no idea what’s coming,” she said.
