TOLEDO, Ohio — Dramatic video captured the moment the steeple of a century-old former Catholic church collapsed Saturday as flames tore through the vacant building in West Toledo’s Five Points neighborhood.
Firefighters from Toledo Fire & Rescue were called around 6:30 a.m. after reports of heavy black smoke pouring from the roof of the former St. Agnes Church on Martha Avenue. Crews arrived to find the structure already heavily involved. Officials immediately declared a defensive attack, meaning no one entered the building because of the risk of collapse.
The steeple collapsed shortly after crews arrived. The roof burned out completely. Nearby homes were evacuated as a precaution. No injuries were reported.
Residents described a chaotic scene. One neighbor said the street looked as if it were on fire. Fourteen people in an adjacent recovery housing building were awakened by the blaze around 6:45 a.m. A charter school that now occupies the former parish school building suffered only minor smoke, water, and window damage.
St. Agnes opened in 1910 and served the neighborhood for nearly a century before the Diocese of Toledo closed it in 2005 as part of a wave of parish mergers. The diocese no longer owns the property. Neighbors and former parishioners gathered as excavators later began tearing down the unstable remains. Many spoke of weddings, baptisms, and school graduations tied to the landmark. Toledo Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz called the loss devastating and described the church as one of the most beautiful in the city.
Investigators, including arson teams, remain on the case. Officials have released no cause and have identified no suspects. The fire is still listed as under investigation. Martha Avenue was closed for hours while crews worked hotspots and then demolished the gutted structure for safety. Air-quality monitoring found no unusual readings.
The video circulating online shows towering orange flames against the morning sky, thick smoke, a ladder truck in position, and firefighters pulling hose as the steeple gives way. The images have drawn widespread attention and some speculation on social media about a possible pattern of church fires. Authorities have not confirmed any such connection in this case.
City officials issued emergency authorization for demolition and debris removal. The investigation continues.
