A 28-year-old woman held at knifepoint for 10 hours by her ex saw a police car pull into a gas station and took her only shot.
CCTV from the early hours of Aug. 26, 2025, in Corinto, Minas Gerais, shows her sitting tense in the passenger seat of a black car as her 35-year-old estranged husband, Reinaldo Azevedo Filho, pumps gas. A Military Police patrol vehicle rolls onto the forecourt. She unbuckles, flings the door open, and sprints toward the officers in about three seconds.
Azevedo Filho gives chase. Cops tackle him on the pavement before he can reach her. The woman makes it into the patrol car. He is cuffed on the spot.
The pair had been together until two months earlier. She fled her hometown of Coração de Jesus and hid at her brother’s place in Conceição do Mato Dentro after he refused to accept the breakup, made repeated calls and threatened her family. On the afternoon of Aug. 25, he showed up with a knife, forced her into the car and took her phone.
She later told police he raped her during the drive, threatened to kill her “slowly” and said he would drive the car off a cliff if they ran into cops. He stopped at the Corinto station to refuel. Officers on routine night patrol happened to pull in at the same moment.
“When the attacker stops at the gas station to fill up, the victim, who is in the passenger seat, is uncomfortable and distressed, looking around,” Capt. Márcio Brandão said. She waited until he was distracted, then ran.
Azevedo Filho was arrested on charges of rape, threats, kidnapping, and false imprisonment. A judge converted the flagrante arrest into preventive detention. He is being held at the Corinto prison and has denied the accusations. The victim requested a protective order the same night. Her identity has been withheld.
The clip has racked up millions of views online. Police called it a lucky break that saved a life.
