DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — There are drunk-driving videos, and then there is the kind of Florida production that arrives with a $50,000 Ford Bronco, a parked Honda that no longer lives in its parking spot, a closed-fist argument on a front lawn, and a 24-year-old telling the cops she thought everybody was still friends.
Elizabeth Pearl Boucher was arrested in the early hours of August 30 after Daytona Beach police say she whipped a Bronco through a neighborhood, clipped a turn the way people clip a turn when they should not be driving, and T-boned a Honda sitting in a driveway. Home-security footage shows the SUV knocking the parked car off its spot and shoving it into the grass like it owed her money. Nobody was inside the Honda. That was the good news. Everything after that was the rest of the evening.
When officers asked what happened, Boucher offered the official line of the night: she hit the front light. An officer, looking at a car that had been relocated several feet, was not buying the headlight-only theory.“You didn’t just hit the front of the car,” he said. “You just took the car completely off.”That is not a fender-bender. That is a Bronco announcing itself.
The homeowner came outside after the crash. According to the arrest affidavit, Boucher got out of the Bronco, police say from the passenger side first, then tried to get back in the driver’s door, and the conversation did not stay conversational. Police allege Boucher struck the woman in the face with a closed fist. The homeowner hit her back, sending Boucher to the ground. Boucher got up and followed her toward the porch. This is the part of the night that turned a property-damage call into a battery case.
By the time body cameras were rolling, Boucher was in a black sports bra and leggings, having trouble standing, and handing an officer a passport when they asked for a license. She also produced a vape and explained it “didn’t even work,” which is not the defense most people lead with after relocating someone else’s Honda. She declined field sobriety exercises. She tried to walk off the investigation. She refused a breath test. She asked, more than once, not to go to jail.
Then came the line that turned a local DUI into national content.“I thought we were all friends.”An officer, to his credit, did not pretend the friendship was off. He just added the small print.“We’re all friends but we still have a job to do.”
That is the entire American traffic stop in one sentence. She said she wasn’t resisting. She mentioned her daughter. She asked if she was going to jail. The answer was yes. She was booked on DUI, DUI with property damage, refusal to submit to testing, battery, resisting an officer without violence, and possession of a controlled substance without a prescription. She was released the next day. Court is still coming. Charges are allegations. Innocent until proven guilty. All of that is true and none of it makes the video less of a disaster movie with a smoke-show lead.
Florida does this. A good-looking woman in workout clothes, a Bronco that should have stayed in the garage, a parked car that became a yard decoration, a punch, a passport instead of a license, and a closing argument built entirely on vibes. She thought they were friends. The Honda did not. The lawn did not. The officer still had a job to do.
