China Just Came Out With A Bionic Koi Fish That Looks Scary Real Once In The Water

Beijing just put a robotic arowana in a tank at a trade fair and dared the world to tell it apart from a living fish. The video is already circulating. The fish flicks its tail, glides, turns, and disappears into the water as if it belongs there. It doesn’t. It’s a machine.

This is the BG-5 Golden Dragon Fish bionic robot, shown this week at the China International Fair for Trade in Services in Beijing. Multi-joint tail. Lifelike scales. Sensors in the head. It swims on its own. No remote-control joystick required for the basic act of looking alive.

China is not treating this as a science-fair toy. Similar bionic fish have already been sent into the Yangtze and West Lake. Officials say they collect water-quality data, watch for invasive species, and even help retrieve lost phones. That is the public story. The quieter story is that Beijing now has cheap, quiet, fish-shaped platforms that can loiter in rivers and lakes without drawing a second look.

The United States builds serious underwater drones, large, expensive, obviously mechanical vehicles meant for the deep ocean and the Navy.
