A 24-year-old man and woman were killed in the early hours of Sunday after a southbound No. 4 train struck them at Manhattan’s Spring Street station.

Chilling footage circulating online appears to show the pair sitting on the tracks as the train approached. Police sources said there was no indication they had been pushed or accidentally fallen.

The man was from Sayreville, New Jersey. The woman was from Dayton, New York. Both were pronounced dead at the scene. Their names have not been released pending notification of their families.

Officers received a call around 3:14 a.m. that two people had been struck. First responders found them unresponsive. The motorman applied the emergency brakes but could not stop in time, according to reports.

Investigators are examining whether the pair had been drinking beforehand, sources familiar with the inquiry told the New York Post. The station was closed in the aftermath as police worked the scene. One body was later seen covered on the platform.

The deaths come just over a week after MTA construction flagger Moet McCullum, 41, a mother of three, was fatally struck by a D train while working on tracks near Yankee Stadium. That incident remains under investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board.

Authorities have not publicly determined why the two 24-year-olds were on the tracks in the middle of the night.
