There’s a video making the rounds of a guy sitting on the floor in what looks like someone’s converted courtyard, frying up a pile of puffy bread in a giant wok like it’s no big deal. Pink walls. Gas cylinder just hanging out. Random people walking around barefoot. Classic chaotic street-food energy.

Then the camera pans.

A rat. Not hiding. Not scurrying away in shame. Just casually strolling across a metal tray that still has food remnants on it, right next to the station where they’re making the stuff you’re supposed to put in your mouth.

This is the kind of clip that lives rent-free in your head at 2 a.m. when you’re deciding between DoorDash and just going to bed hungry. You watch the first five seconds thinking “okay, rustic, authentic, whatever.” Then the rat shows up like it pays rent there and suddenly you’re questioning every “best street food in India” TikTok you’ve ever liked.

Look, nobody’s pretending every street stall in the world is a Michelin kitchen. That’s not how this works. People eat incredible food off carts that would give a health inspector a nosebleed. That’s part of the deal.

This is not that level. This is the rat making eye contact with the camera like “What are you looking at?” while the cook keeps flipping bread like nothing is happening.

Some people will watch this and still say they’d smash it. Those people are built different. They’ve probably eaten things that would hospitalize a tourist and lived to tell the story. Respect.

Most of us are not those people.
