A street preacher quoting scripture in broad daylight has been treated like a suspect in a thought-crime investigation after officers decided that what the Bible says is less important than how a passerby felt.
In footage that has sparked fury online, two police officers accused the man of “homophobic and racist” remarks. Then they admitted they did not actually know what he had said.
A third officer arrived and made it even worse.
She explained they were gathering evidence to see whether a hate crime or public order offence had been committed. It “doesn’t matter” if the words came from the Bible, she said. Intentions mean nothing. What counts is how the person listening feels.

The clip, filmed in a busy shopping street, shows officers in high-vis and body cameras circling a man who appears to be doing what Christians have done for centuries: preaching in public.No shouting. No violence. No threats. Just the Word of God – and a police response that looks more like an ideological enforcement squad than keepers of the peace.
One officer is seen checking a phone. Another lectures the camera. The message is unmistakable: you can quote Leviticus or Romans all you like, but if someone is offended, the state will investigate you.

The most chilling line is the one that will make ordinary people sit up.
Intentions, the officer insisted, are irrelevant. The test is the listener’s emotional reaction.
That is not how criminal law used to work. That is how campus speech codes work. Now it appears to have been imported onto the high street, complete with body-worn cameras and a clipboard mentality.
Public order legislation was meant to stop fights and genuine intimidation. It was not meant to give every easily-offended bystander a veto over religious speech.
Yet here we are: officers who cannot even repeat the alleged words still treating a preacher as a potential hate criminal.
Priorities?
While knife crime, shoplifting and anti-social behaviour continue to plague towns and cities, police resources are being spent on whether a Bible verse caused “distress.”No one is suggesting people should be free to scream slurs through a megaphone. But quoting scripture in a public place, and then being told the source of the words is irrelevant, is a different matter entirely.
Free speech campaigners have long warned that “hate” has become a catch-all for views the modern establishment dislikes. This video will only fuel that argument.
If the test is no longer what was actually said, or even whether the speaker meant harm, but simply how someone felt, then almost any traditional Christian teaching on sex, marriage or sin becomes a police matter.
That is not policing. That is managing public opinion with a warrant card.
The new blasphemy laws
Britain used to mock countries that arrested people for religious speech. Now we have officers on camera saying the Bible itself is no defence.
The preacher’s “crime,” as far as the footage shows, was not violence or threats. It was the possibility that someone heard something they did not like.
And in today’s Britain, that can be enough to trigger an investigation.
1984 warned that the state would one day police thoughts. It did not mention they would do it while filming themselves for social media, insisting they were only following procedure.
This is not law and order. This is the nanny state in a stab vest, lecturing a man with a Bible that his intentions are irrelevant and the feelings of strangers are the only evidence that counts.
If that does not alarm you, wait until they decide your beliefs are the next public order problem.
