Shocking video has emerged of a French suburb descending into scenes resembling a war zone after a police car collided with a motorbike during an operation against illegal street racing.
In Saint-Pierre-des-Corps, near Tours, a night of violence left around 20 vehicles in flames, including police cars. Thick plumes of smoke rose over the La Rabaterie neighbourhood as young men clashed with officers late on Saturday. Eight police officers and one gendarme were injured. Five people were arrested.
The trouble began when officers moved in on a group performing dangerous “rodéos urbains”, high-speed motorbike stunts on public roads. During the intervention, a police vehicle struck one of the bikes. The 19-year-old rider suffered a serious leg injury and was taken to hospital. His life is not thought to be in danger.
Footage circulating online shows burning cars, a police van engulfed in flames, and chaotic crowds in the fading light. One local described it as looking like “a scene of war.”
The police officer who was driving the vehicle involved in the collision has been placed in custody while an investigation examines the circumstances of the crash. Prosecutors have opened an inquiry.
The violence continued into the early hours, with fireworks and projectiles thrown at officers. Reinforcements were drafted in to restore order.
The incident has again highlighted persistent problems in some French suburban neighbourhoods, where repeated outbreaks of urban violence have become familiar. Critics point to long-running difficulties with integration in certain banlieues, high youth unemployment, and the presence of organised groups of young men who treat police interventions as a pretext for confrontation. Successive French governments have struggled to restore authority in these areas after previous waves of riots, including the nationwide unrest of 2023.
Local officials called for calm on Sunday as the neighbourhood returned to an uneasy quiet. An investigation into both the collision and the subsequent disorder is continuing.
