A young man arrived at a house to collect Sophie. Her father came outside and told him the plan had changed. The family had already forbidden her from leaving. She would not be seeing him again.

The reason was not hidden. The father said the visitor did not fit their lifestyle and that he did not want Sophie “corrupted.” Then he made the objection specific. They were not of the same faith. Sophie had told him the young man had no faith at all.

The visitor did not deny it. He said he personally did not believe, though he understood people who did and had no problem with their religion. The father answered that the family did have a problem with it. They were devout Christians, he said, and he did not want his daughter mixing with someone who had not tried to connect with God.

The young man pointed to his own conduct. He was nice to Sophie. He treated people well. Sophie wanted to see him. The father put those points to one side. The most important thing in life, he said, was God. God came before him, before the visitor, and even before Sophie. He could not allow the relationship because the young man did not see or feel God. He called him empty. Sophie, he added, was in her room and would not be allowed out until she promised she would not see the young man again.
