Shocking footage shows the moment a jewellery shop owner ambushed an armed robber who vaulted the counter after pointing a gun at his son in a coastal Brazilian city.
The dramatic CCTV, which has circulated widely online, captures the terrifying seconds inside Bethe Semi-Joias on Rua Estefano José Vanolli in the São Vicente neighbourhood of Itajaí, Santa Catarina. A 24-year-old man, wearing a dark hooded top pulled tight over his face, entered the store on the afternoon of Tuesday, 6 October, and asked to look at wedding rings.
Staff began to assist him. Moments later he produced a firearm from his waistband, levelled it at the owner’s son, and announced the robbery before leaping over the glass display counter toward an employee. In the grainy but clear security images, the hooded figure is seen mid-climb as the bald, bespectacled shopkeeper, who had been positioned behind the counter, reacts instantly.
The proprietor, who holds a legally registered firearm, fired three shots. Two struck the suspect; the third hit a wall inside the shop. The robber collapsed on the customer side of the counter. An accomplice who had remained near the entrance fled and has not been identified.
Military Police officers arriving at the scene found the wounded man receiving emergency treatment from SAMU paramedics. He was taken to Hospital e Maternidade Marieta Konder Bornhausen. Officers recovered a firearm from the floor near the counter. Images released with the footage show a black semi-automatic pistol consistent with a Taurus TH-series 9mm and a revolver, along with loose ammunition.
Checks of police systems revealed the suspect, originally from the northern state of Pará, was already a fugitive. He was the subject of an open recapture warrant issued by the Penal Execution Court in Itajaí in connection with a previous robbery conviction. Records also showed 27 prior police reports, the majority linked to drug trafficking and robbery offences.
The owner told officers the gunman had specifically threatened his son before attempting to cross the counter. No staff or customers were injured. Forensic teams later examined the premises and collected items left by the suspect.
The incident has drawn attention in Brazil, where armed robberies of jewellery stores remain a persistent problem and where licensed civilians may legally carry firearms for self-defence under existing regulations. Local reports confirmed the shopkeeper’s weapon was properly registered. Police continue to investigate the identity of the second man seen at the door and the full circumstances of the confrontation.
