A German travel influencer has released disturbing footage of a man in rural Kyrgyzstan who refused to leave her campsite until she had filmed him after he propositioned her for sex and grilled her about whether she had a husband.

Valerie Kraus, known online as journeyious, was travelling alone through the mountainous region with her horse when the stranger approached her tent. He asked whether she was married, inquired how many people her tent could sleep, and then asked bluntly: “Do you like to have sex?”

When she declined, and he insisted they go to his yurt, she replied: “You said sex, I said no.” The encounter, which she later said she was “so glad” she recorded, has been widely shared by outlets highlighting the risks faced by Western women in certain countries.

Kraus, who has documented previous unwanted advances during solo trips, has noted that Instagram initially removed her original video without explanation before she reposted it. The clip shows the man lingering and pressing for personal details in a remote area where help was not immediately available.

Kyrgyzstan is a majority-Muslim country where traditional attitudes toward unmarried women travelling alone can differ sharply from those in Western Europe. In many Muslim-majority societies, unaccompanied female travel is discouraged or viewed as inviting attention, and local men may interpret Western women’s independence and appearance as an invitation. Similar incidents involving other German women camping in the same region have also circulated online, with travellers reporting men approaching their tents and asking about husbands or marital status.

Travel safety analysts and some European commentators argue that cases like Kraus’s illustrate why attractive young women face elevated risks when travelling alone to destinations with different social norms around gender, modesty, and interaction. While Kraus has previously spoken positively about hospitality she received elsewhere in Kyrgyzstan, the filmed exchange demonstrates how quickly an encounter can turn sexual and persistent in isolated settings. Campaigners point out that women who prioritise adventure over local customs can find themselves dealing with harassment that ranges from verbal propositions to more serious threats.

Authorities in Kyrgyzstan later contacted Kraus after the video spread, arranged an apology from the man involved, and said steps would be taken to reduce such incidents for tourists. She has described the country as one of her favourites overall and emphasised that harassment occurs worldwide. Critics of unrestricted solo travel, however, say such reassurances do little to change the practical reality on the ground for Western women whose looks and independence mark them out in conservative rural areas.

The footage has fuelled debate about whether the freedom Western women take for granted at home translates safely to every part of the world. For many, the blunt question “Do you like to have sex?” directed at a lone camper is a clear reminder that some destinations carry risks that no amount of optimism or travel insurance fully erases.
