DEARBORN HEIGHTS, Mich. — A woman who apparently thought she could quietly walk off with two giant 12-foot Halloween skeletons from a Home Depot sitting right next door to the local police station learned the hard way that drones don’t take lunch breaks.
According to drone footage released by TCD Dearborn News, the blonde-haired suspect loaded the oversized boxes, valued at roughly $600, into a shopping cart, rolled them out of the store, and then tried to hide her haul by heaving the boxes into nearby bushes. The plan, it seems, was to treat the massive decorations like discarded trash and come back for them later. It did not go well.
Dearborn Heights officers launched a drone almost immediately after the store called in the description. The aerial view shows the woman unloading the skeletons and dumping them into the brush, then later sprinting across a parking lot when officers closed in. She didn’t get far. The brief attempt to run ended with her in custody, the giant boxes still sitting in the bushes where she’d left them.
The location made the whole episode especially hard to miss. The Home Depot sits adjacent to the Dearborn Heights Police Department, so the woman essentially committed the theft within shouting distance of the people who were going to be looking for her. Once the drone was overhead, her options narrowed quickly.
Police recovered the skeletons, which are the tall, plastic yard decorations that have become a Halloween staple in recent years. The woman was arrested after the short foot chase in the parking lot. No further details on charges have been released, but the video leaves little doubt about the sequence of events.
Retail theft cases like this one tend to highlight two things at once: how casually some people treat walking out of stores with high-value merchandise, and how quickly modern tools can close the gap when a suspect tries to blend in. In this instance, the combination of a police station next door and a drone overhead turned what looked like a low-effort grab into a very short afternoon.
The skeletons are back at the store. The woman is not.
