If you needed proof that nature is both terrifying and kind of amazing, this is it.
A video making the rounds on social media shows an alligator frozen inside a sheet of ice in Arkansas, and yes, it looks exactly as shocking as it sounds. The footage was shared after the gator was discovered early in the morning near Dumas, Arkansas, during a duck hunting trip.
At first glance, it looks like something went very wrong.
But plot twist: the alligator isn’t dead.
According to the post, the gator is in a state called brumation, which is basically a reptile’s version of hibernation. When temperatures drop, alligators can slow their metabolism to a near standstill and survive extreme cold, even freezing conditions, by sticking their snouts above ice to breathe.
Yes. That is a real thing they do. Nature is wild.
The footage was shared by Martin Walt, who captured the frozen gator while out hunting. The animal appears completely still, encased in ice, looking like a prehistoric statue, which understandably sent people straight to the comments in disbelief.
While most people associate alligators with Florida swamps and Louisiana bayous, they do live in parts of Arkansas, especially in the southern regions. Still, seeing one frozen solid in the ice is not something most people expect to encounter before sunrise.
Wildlife experts have explained that once temperatures warm up, gators in brumation can thaw out and go on with their lives like nothing happened, which somehow makes this both comforting and deeply unsettling.
