Willow Smith, 26, turned a supposedly intimate Blue Note Los Angeles set into another viral freak show, thrashing, contorting, and pulling faces like she was mid-exorcism while belting experimental tracks. The footage, which exploded online this week, shows the “Whip My Hair” alum in a sequined dress flailing her arms, grimacing, and delivering vocals that one critic bluntly called “erratic.” Online, the roast was immediate.

This isn’t a one-off. The Smith siblings have spent more than a decade treating normal behavior like an optional lifestyle choice — and their parents let them.

Start with Willow. At roughly 11, midway through her “Whip My Hair” tour with Justin Bieber, she decided she was done. After Will Smith told her she still had Australian dates, she shaved her entire head overnight in a Dublin hotel. Will later called the moment “magical.” Willow has described it as the only control she had. She has shaved it again onstage since. In a 2014 New York Times interview alongside her brother, she declared that time doesn’t exist because she can make it go fast or slow, and that reality is just “a fragment of a holographic reality that a higher consciousness made.” She has also publicly embraced being bisexual, pansexual, and polyamorous, telling her mother and grandmother on Red Table Talk that her ideal setup is one man and one woman at the same time, because monogamy is “fear-based.”

Her brother Jaden, 28, has always been the more dedicated performance artist. He showed up to Kim Kardashian and Kanye West’s wedding — and later his own prom — in an all-white Batman costume. At the 2017 Met Gala he carried his freshly shaved dreadlocks around as a handbag while blasting his own music. His Twitter feed has long been a greatest-hits of non sequiturs: “How Can Mirrors Be Real If Our Eyes Aren’t Real,” “I Am Not A Human And I Don’t Speak English,” and the observation that peeing can feel so good you start crying. He once claimed he built a half-scale pyramid in his parents’ backyard. In a 2024 Complex interview, he spent much of the conversation answering questions with quotes from Twilight he had written on scraps of paper in his pocket. Days later he posted that all the “weird shit” people had seen him do was him thinking he was acting normal, and that he now sometimes does it on purpose because trying to fit in “is not exactly going to plan.”

The siblings’ joint 2014 T Magazine interview remains the Rosetta Stone of the whole enterprise. They explained that school teaches nothing, that they prefer ancient texts and quantum physics, and that Jaden’s goal was to become “the most craziest person of all time.” Will Smith has said the family doesn’t do punishment; the kids are simply “responsible for their lives.”

The result is two adults who still treat public life like an ongoing science experiment in how far celebrity privilege will stretch. Willow’s Blue Note performance is just the latest data point. The Smith kids didn’t invent nepo-baby oddness. They perfected it.
