A heavily pregnant woman gave birth in the open air outside her own home in Brazil after her labour suddenly intensified and she could not reach the hospital in time, in astonishing security camera footage that has gone viral around the world.
Mayra Tonche, 26, was preparing to leave for the hospital with her husband and their two young children when powerful contractions struck. Within minutes, she was leaning against a wall by the gate of their house in the small town of Ibaiti, in northern Paraná state, as her baby arrived on the driveway.
The dramatic clip shows the mother of three, already mother to a five-year-old boy and a two-year-old girl, standing in a bright pink dress and gripping a post as the birth progressed with remarkable speed. Her husband, Pablo, 37, a delivery driver, is seen pacing and running back and forth in clear panic while trying to summon an ambulance on his phone.
In one striking moment captured on the footage, Mayra can be heard asking her frantic husband to lower his voice so they would not wake the neighbours – even as she was in the middle of delivering their third child.
Neighbours soon rushed out after hearing her cries and helped with the newborn. The baby boy, later named Rodolpho, was born with the umbilical cord wrapped tightly around his neck and briefly turned purple. Pablo managed to free the cord in the chaos before medical help arrived.
The couple had been told only two days earlier that Mayra was not yet sufficiently dilated and that the baby was not expected until around 19 June. She was already 38 weeks pregnant and had been under monitoring for gestational diabetes.
Speaking afterwards, Mayra said everything happened far faster than she expected. “I sat in the car but couldn’t stay there. The pain was too severe. I got out and went to the garage. The next thing I knew his head was coming,” she recalled. “It was all so quick. There was no time to think about anything.”
Pablo described the moment as pure desperation: “I didn’t know what to do. I was trying to call the ambulance, our two small children were in the car, and the baby had just been born. Then I saw he was going purple.”
Mother and baby were taken to hospital after the birth. Rodolpho weighed 3.07 kg and measured 49 cm. He spent a short period under observation but recovered well. Mother and son are now home and doing well.
The raw security camera footage, which shows the entire sequence from the moment contractions took hold to neighbours arriving with towels and blankets, has been viewed millions of times across social media. It has been widely shared in Brazil and, more recently, internationally, including in a viral Turkish post that highlighted Mayra’s remarkable composure amid the chaos.
Local reports described the birth as a “lightning-fast” delivery that took place after just a handful of strong contractions, with the family never managing to leave their property.
The couple has since spoken about their relief that the emergency ended happily, even though neither had imagined their son would arrive in the driveway rather than a hospital delivery room.
