A topless woman climbed onto a highway sign above the busy 55 Freeway in Santa Ana on Monday afternoon, forcing major closures and bringing traffic to a crawl while officers negotiated for hours to talk her down.
Video circulating online shows the woman standing on the narrow platform of a large green overhead sign for the Garden Grove Freeway (State Route 22), Chapman Avenue, and Katella Avenue near 17th Street. She’s shirtless, wearing dark pants, and positioned high above multi-lane traffic as vehicles back up below. Onlookers in the footage can be heard noting she’s without a top as the scene unfolds under clear skies.
Santa Ana police said officers responded around 3 p.m. to reports of a woman on the overpass who appeared to be threatening to jump. California Highway Patrol closed all northbound lanes of the 55 south of 17th Street and later shut additional southbound lanes, creating significant backups in the area. Drivers were advised to avoid the corridor and seek alternate routes.
Crisis negotiators from the Santa Ana Police Department spent roughly two and a half hours talking with the woman. She was eventually convinced to surrender and was brought down safely with help from the Orange County Fire Authority. Authorities took her to a local hospital for a mental health evaluation. No injuries to the woman or others were reported.
All lanes had reopened by about 6 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol, though residual delays lingered as the afternoon rush continued. The incident drew heavy attention online, with footage from local accounts capturing the woman perched on the sign structure amid the stopped traffic.
Police have not released the woman’s name or further details about what led to the episode. Officials thanked the public for their patience while responders worked to resolve the situation without incident.
