A bloodthirsty pit bull sank its teeth into a 1-year-old boy’s leg and refused to let go on a packed Manhattan sidewalk, leaving the toddler with a gaping hole in his flesh as horrified bystanders desperately fought to pry the animal off, shocking video shows.
The attack unfolded around 11:10 a.m. Sunday outside the Santander Bank at East 13th Street and Broadway in Union Square, according to police and the gut-wrenching footage. A woman who appears to be the boy’s mother frantically tried to pull the black-and-white dog away while screaming for help as the animal locked its jaws onto the child’s left leg.
“Call the police. Someone pull him off! Someone please,” she pleaded over the boy’s cries.
Good Samaritans jumped in amid the chaos. One man repeatedly kicked the pit bull. Another, later identified in reports as bodybuilder Kevin Richardson, put the dog in a headlock and began choking it. A third bystander grabbed the canine from behind by its private parts, finally forcing the animal to release its grip.
“Brother, that’s crazy,” a man filming the horror can be heard saying. “Oh my God. There is a hole in his f–king leg, bro. There is a hole in that boy’s leg.”
The dog, a 2-year-old named Disco Bubba, according to police sources, was yanked off the child. Its owner, who had been pulling ineffectively on the leash during the attack, then calmly walked away with the animal and waited at a nearby bus stop as bystanders called 911.
The boy’s father told cops he was picking his son up when the toddler’s leg swung in front of the pit bull’s mouth, prompting the bite. Medics rushed the child to NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue with multiple leg lacerations. He was listed in stable condition and required “a lot of stitches,” his uncle said.
Police said the owner is not facing criminal charges. The family indicated they would pursue other avenues to have the dog euthanized.
“It’s walking around, that’s dangerous,” the uncle told reporters.
The owner had previously posted photos of Disco Bubba on Instagram, calling him his “best friend” and “world’s best watchdog.”
The disturbing video quickly spread online, capturing the frantic struggle on the busy sidewalk as pedestrians and a bicycle blocked parts of the scene.
