DEARBORN, Mich. — Surveillance video shows a rapid and violent confrontation inside a local retail store that ended with gunfire, as a 30-year-old woman with a concealed pistol license opened fire on a man attacking her boyfriend. Wayne County prosecutors have since declined to file charges against her, determining there is insufficient evidence to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that she was not acting in self-defense or the defense of another person.
The incident unfolded just after 6 p.m. Saturday inside White House Kicks, a shoe and clothing store near Ford Road and Oakman Boulevard. Security footage released by Dearborn Police captures the chaotic moments in detail. A woman wearing a pink jacket entered the store alongside her 36-year-old boyfriend, who was dressed in a gray tracksuit. After the boyfriend greeted another man who appeared to be shopping, a man in blue suddenly attacked him, and the situation quickly escalated into a physical brawl amid racks of clothing and shelves lined with sneakers.
In the video, the fight spills across the store’s interior, with individuals grappling near display cases and merchandise. The woman is seen reaching into her purse, drawing a firearm, and firing. A witness who spoke to reporters described the scene as “madness,” recounting that the men began fighting before the woman pulled her gun to protect her boyfriend. The witness estimated three or four shots were fired. Dispatch audio confirms the woman herself called 911, stating she “just had to shoot somebody.”
Dearborn Police Chief Issa Shahin said the parties involved appeared to be acquaintances who “didn’t like each other,” noting that the confrontation escalated into a fight once they encountered one another inside the store. The 33-year-old man who was shot in the back was transported to a hospital, where he remains in critical condition.
Prosecutors with the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office announced they would not pursue charges against the woman, a licensed CPL holder, after reviewing the evidence. Chief Shahin acknowledged the decision falls under Prosecutor Kym Worthy’s authority, stating that police’s role is to gather evidence thoroughly and that he has faith in the office’s process. He added that the investigation is not necessarily closed, and charges could still be considered against those who instigated the physical fight.
The roughly 25-second security video, which has circulated widely, shows the disorderly aftermath as people move through the store following the gunfire, with clothing racks, shoe shelves, and display cases visible in the background. Faces in the released footage are blurred. Chief Shahin emphasized that while Dearborn remains a safe and welcoming city, residents should stay vigilant and aware of their surroundings.
Authorities continue to review the full circumstances of the altercation as the injured man recovers.
