They were two drinks in at a mid-tier spot with decent lighting and overpriced small plates when the conversation finally veered off the usual second-date safe zones. He’d already mentioned, almost in passing, that he was conservative. The mood shifted, but it didn’t fully detonate until she brought up gender.
She leaned in, half-smiling like she was about to drop something obvious. “There aren’t just two genders. There are unlimited genders. It’s a spectrum. People can identify however they want.”
He put his fork down. “There are two. Male and female. That’s it.”
She blinked, then laughed like he’d just said the Earth was flat. “That’s not true. Gender is a social construct. You can be non-binary, genderfluid, agender, demiboy, whatever. There are as many genders as there are people who feel them. Unlimited.”
He nodded slowly, the way people do when they’re deciding whether to keep eating or start the argument they know is coming. “Okay. Prove it. If there are unlimited genders, name one that isn’t just a different way of saying male or female, or a feeling someone has. Give me a third biological sex that exists in humans. Not a personality. Not a vibe. An actual third category with its own reproductive system or chromosomes that produces offspring.”
She sat back. “That’s not how it works. Gender isn’t the same as sex. Sex is biological, gender is identity. You’re confusing the two on purpose.”
“I’m not confusing them,” he said. “You’re saying gender is unlimited and separate from biology. So if someone wakes up and decides they’re a new gender that nobody’s heard of, does that create a new gender, or are they just describing a feeling? Because if it’s a feeling, then we’re back to two sexes and a bunch of people expressing themselves differently. That’s fine. That’s not unlimited genders.”
She crossed her arms. “Science says gender is a spectrum. There are intersex people. There are people who don’t fit neatly into male or female. You’re being reductive.”
“Intersex conditions are disorders of sexual development. They’re rare variations within male or female, not a third sex. And none of them create a new reproductive category. If there were unlimited genders, hospitals would be delivering babies that aren’t male or female. They’re not. Every single human is one or the other, or has a developmental condition that still tracks back to one of those two. Show me the third gamete. Show me the third chromosome pairing that isn’t XX or XY or a known disorder.”
She stared at him for a second, then went for the exit ramp. “You’re just being closed-minded. If someone says they’re non-binary, you should respect that. It doesn’t hurt you.”
“I can respect that someone feels a certain way without agreeing that it creates a new biological category,” he said. “You’re the one who said unlimited. Unlimited means infinite. Infinite genders would require infinite biological possibilities. There aren’t any. There are two sexes. Everything else is either a medical condition, a personality trait, or a preference. Which one are you actually arguing for?”
The table went quiet after that. She didn’t name a third sex. She didn’t point to a hospital that had delivered a baby that was neither male nor female. She circled back to feelings, identity, and how he was refusing to keep up. He kept asking for the same thing: one piece of evidence that a third, fourth, or unlimited category exists outside of self-description.
By the time the check came, the date was over in every way that mattered. She looked at him like he’d failed a test he didn’t know he was taking. He looked at her like he’d just watched someone insist the number of primary colors was unlimited because people feel different shades. They split the bill, said the polite version of goodbye, and both went home knowing exactly where the other one stood. The drinks were fine. The argument was the only part of the night that felt real.
