Welsh singer Bonnie Tyler, best known for her powerful, raspy vocals on the 1980s anthem "Total Eclipse of the Heart," has died at age 75.

Tyler passed away unexpectedly on July 8, 2026, in a hospital in Faro, Portugal, where she had lived for decades. Her family announced the news on her official website and social media channels.

“Bonnie’s family and team are heartbroken to announce that Bonnie unexpectedly passed away last night in a hospital in Portugal as a result of the illness that she was being treated for,” the statement read. “We will issue a further statement shortly but for now ask for privacy to deal with this tragedy.”Tyler is survived by her husband of more than 50 years, Robert Sullivan.

Tyler had been battling serious health issues since May 2026. She underwent emergency surgery in Faro for a perforated intestine and was placed in a medically induced coma to aid her recovery. She suffered a cardiac arrest while doctors attempted to wean her from the coma, but was successfully resuscitated. In mid-June, she awoke from the coma but remained “very unwell” and in intensive care, with doctors expressing cautious optimism about a slow but steady recovery at the time. Complications from the illness ultimately proved fatal.

Born Gaynor Hopkins on June 8, 1951, in Skewen, Neath, Wales, Tyler rose from local talent contests in the late 1960s to international stardom. After signing with RCA Records, she released her debut album The World Starts Tonight in 1977, scoring early hits with “Lost in France” and the breakthrough “It’s a Heartache,” which reached No. 4 in the UK and No. 3 in the US and sold millions worldwide. A vocal cord nodule surgery around that time gave her the distinctive husky, raspy tone that became her signature.

The 1980s marked her peak commercial success. Teaming up with producer and songwriter Jim Steinman, she delivered the massive 1983 hit “Total Eclipse of the Heart” from the UK No. 1 album Faster Than the Speed of Night. The dramatic power ballad sold over six million copies in the US alone and became a cultural staple, frequently resurfacing during solar and lunar eclipses. She followed it with another Steinman-penned classic, “Holding Out for a Hero,” featured prominently in the film Footloose.

Tyler continued releasing music across decades, achieving strong success in Europe with producer Dieter Bohlen in the 1990s (including the hit “Bitterblue”) and representing the UK at the 2013 Eurovision Song Contest with “Believe in Me.” She earned three Grammy nominations and three Brit Award nominations over her career. In 2022, she was awarded an MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) for services to music.

Her later albums, including The Best Is Yet to Come (2021), showed she remained active and committed to her craft well into her later years. Tyler’s powerful voice and memorable anthems made her a beloved figure across generations, with her hits continuing to resonate on radio, in films, and among fans worldwide.

Tyler’s passing marks the end of an era for classic rock and pop ballads. Her family has requested privacy during this difficult time.
