Dramatic mobile phone video filmed from a nearby support vessel captures the terrifying final moments of Borr Drilling’s Prospector 5 jack-up rig as it lists and goes under in the darkness off the coast of Gabon.

In the chilling split-screen footage that has gone viral, the massive structure is seen brightly illuminated against the night sky, its yellow and white superstructure and towering derrick glowing while green helipad lights flicker on the water. One view shows the rig already low in the waves and tilting alarmingly; the other is filmed from the deck of a support boat, where crew members in high-visibility clothing stand watching the unfolding disaster. Waves slap against the hull as the industrial giant, still fully lit, settles lower and lower into the Atlantic.

The incident struck at approximately 20:37 local time on Saturday, 24 October 2026, near the Dussafu Marin permit area off Mayumba in southwestern Gabon. Prospector 5, a 2014-built Friede & Goldman JU-2000E class jack-up owned and operated by Borr Drilling, was in the final stages of positioning itself for a drilling campaign for BW Energy. It had not yet begun drilling when disaster struck.

According to the company, the rig suffered a classic “punch-through” during preload activities. In these operations, the three giant legs are lowered and loaded with weight to drive them firmly into the seabed so the platform can be jacked up clear of the waves. Preliminary information indicates that one or more of the legs suddenly broke through a harder upper layer of sediment into softer material below. The sudden, uncontrolled drop caused the massive structure to lose stability, tilt sharply, and ultimately sink.

Of the 115 people on board, 110 have been safely accounted for and are being brought ashore in Gabon for medical checks and support. Five remain missing. Reports circulating among industry sources and cited by Reuters have named an Indian national among those unaccounted for and claimed he was later found dead, with the remaining four said to include three Gabonese nationals and one other expatriate (some accounts have mentioned a Croatian). However, Gabonese authorities and Borr Drilling’s own statements have continued to list all five as missing while extensive search and rescue operations continue. The company has said it is in contact with the families.

Gabon’s Ministry of Petroleum and Gas activated a crisis unit and ordered the navy to reinforce search efforts. Neighbouring Congo has also deployed naval resources. Officials have launched a full technical investigation into the cause of the punch-through. Production at the nearby MaBoMo facility operated by BW Energy was suspended as a precaution under standard procedures; the operator has reported no damage to the installation and no pollution or discharge of harmful substances.

Borr Drilling CEO Bruno Morand said the company’s immediate priority was supporting the search and rescue effort and the welfare of everyone affected. The onshore emergency response team was activated within hours of the incident, and families of the missing can contact a dedicated line set up by the company.

Punch-throughs are a known, if relatively rare, risk for jack-up rigs. They occur when the seabed proves weaker than expected despite prior geotechnical surveys. In this case, the speed of the event appears to have left little time for a controlled response, although the large majority of the crew were successfully evacuated into liferafts and recovered by nearby vessels.

As search teams continue combing the area around the sunken rig, and prepare to deploy remotely operated underwater vehicles to examine the wreck, the dramatic nighttime footage stands as a stark record of how quickly a routine positioning operation can turn catastrophic. For the five families still waiting for news, the lights that blazed so brightly in the video have now gone dark.
