A deranged stalker lunged at two women in a Diamond Head condo garage around noon Monday and snatched a terrified 24-year-old off the ground, hauling her toward his waiting truck as she screamed for her life.
Surveillance footage from the Kainalu condominium on Coconut Avenue captured the brazen attack in chilling detail. The hulking suspect, described by witnesses as a solid man weighing more than 200 pounds, had already confronted the pair near the garage entrance. He shoved the victim’s 77-year-old friend aside, elbowing the elderly woman in the face, then scooped the younger woman into his arms and began carrying her toward the exit and his vehicle.
“He looked like a monster,” the shaken 77-year-old later told local reporters. “He just had so much hatred and craziness in his eyes.” The younger woman fought desperately, yelling “You don’t want to do this. Don’t do this” while her friend screamed “Help! Help!” at the top of her lungs.
Neighbors and bystanders heard the chaos and raced to the scene. One resident, Beverly Lewis, said she looked outside and saw “a man with a woman in a bear hug. She’s off the ground and flailing and screaming.” Several people converged, shouting for the attacker to drop her. The commotion worked. The 24-year-old broke free, and the suspect dumped her before jumping into his truck and speeding off backward down Coconut Avenue.
“We just started screaming at him to drop her, put her down, get out of here,” Lewis recounted. Another neighbor, Mike Finkelstein, described the raw force of the grab: the attacker “went down and he just picked her right up.”
About three hours later, police spotted a man matching the suspect’s description running naked along 22nd Avenue and Diamond Head Road. Officers arrested him shortly afterward. The victims and the tight-knit neighborhood were left traumatized, with the elderly woman reporting night terrors after the ordeal.
Daylight, security cameras, and a busy condo complex meant nothing to the attacker. Only the quick action of ordinary people standing nearby stopped what could have been a far darker outcome.
